This post is part 4 of a 4 part series on creating a Linux VM template in System Center 2012 R2 – Virtual Machine Manager. This post assumes that you have completed the steps from the previous posts.
Part 1: Create VM – Creating the VM and Installing CentOS 6.4
Part 2: Configure VM – Installing the Hyper-v Integration Services and Configuring the Network Adapter
Part 3: Prepping VM – Prepping the VM to Become a Template
Part 4: Create Template – Creating the VM Template in VMM
Now we are going to create a template to deploy CentOS 6.4 using VMM. As discussed in the previous posts, we have installed CentOS 6.4 on a VM, installed the Hyper-v integration components, configured the networking, and prepped the VM for becoming a template.
Copy the virtual hard disk from your VM to your VMM Library server.
Open the VMM console and navigate to the Library pane.
When the disk is finished copying, refresh your library server in the VMM console.
Launch the Create VM Template wizard.
Select Use an existing VM template or virtual hard disk stored in the library, click Browse, and select the VHD you copied earlier.
Give your Template a name and description, and select the Generation you wish to use.
Configure your preferred Hardware settings.
Under the Guest OS profile select [Create new Linux operating system customization settings].
Set your OS version to CentOS Linux 6 (64 bit).
Set your preferred identity information, root credentials, and time zone.
There are no setting you can configure for Applications or SQL Server, so just click through to the summary and click Create.
That’s it! Your template is now ready for deployment.
